Risky Business

In 2019, November 20th was Latina Equal Pay Day. That was the day when Latinas’ earnings from the previous year and up to that time in 2019 would on average equal those of white men’s for 2018. Another way to address the comparison is to point out that Hispanic women’s pay averaged $0.53 to white men’s dollar—a double pay gap based on the intersectional combination of gender and ethnicity. The pay gap narrows slightly to $0.66 to the dollar when the combination of education, years on the job, and location are taken into account.

A major contributing factor to Latinas’ modest pay is that a substantial number work in low-wage positions as maids and housecleaners, cashiers, and retail salespeople. A sobering finding is that as Hispanic women move into occupations requiring more schooling, the pay gap with white men actually expands. Economist Elise Gould wrote,

Even Hispanic women with an advanced degree earn less than white men who only have a bachelor’s degree. That statistic bears … [further comment]: white non-Hispanic men with only a college degree are paid, on average, $6.81 more [an hour] than Latinas with an advanced degree!
